The painting Nag Devata Nathuni Baba by Vikki Paswan depicts the deeply revered family legend of Nathuni Baba, a serpent believed to embody divine grace. Around a century ago in Rajnagar, a woman from the artists ancestral family gave birth, and many serpents emerged at the moment of delivery. All disappeared except one, who hid inside the clay granary and quietly lived in the house. Each day an extra plate of food mysteriously moved forward by itself. When the family prayed with folded hands and invited the unseen presence to come forward, the serpent emerged and sat near the offered plate. Recognising him as a blessing, the family adorned him with a gold nose ring, giving him the name Nathuni. He became a guardian, following family members to the fields, signalling when food or water was needed, and bringing prosperity to the household. The artwork honours this sacred bond, presenting Nathuni Baba as Nag Devata, a symbol of protection, abundance, and ancestral faith.
